Since I'm sure there will still be snow in the Musquash on March 8th, will we need snowshoes for this training?

Joanne,
George has a line on a local organization that he said we might be able to use. Not sure if it is a school or not, but no team member should have to go out and buy or rent shoes if we can borrow them from someone. This line training might take us into some underbrush which would render snowshoes inefficient, anyway. We'll play that one by ear as the date approaches. A good concern, nonetheless. Thanks for voicing what others probably are also thinking.

Hi Folks, A couple of you have already emailed me, asking how to get to the Landing for the line training on March 8th. Off of High Range Rd. is Hickory Hill Rd. At the end of Hickory Hill is where you will park. Walk into the power lines a hundred yards to the signs that mark the trails. You will want the Landing Trail. It will be straight ahead. Keep following this trail until you come to the Landing. This should take about twenty minutes, snow or not. The reason the Landing is specified is because that is where the actual line training will occur. Just like last year when we parked across the street from the town forest, this year we park as close as we can get with our vehicles and hike in. Another reason that we are meeting at the Landing and not at the trail head is because there are other ways to get into the Musquash, and even different trails to take from Hickory Hill. I am adding a link for a map and hopefully it will 'take' on this forum. If it does, then #10 on the map is the Landing. Any questions or concerns, please email me. Anyone who is not sure about hiking in by themselves, email me. See you there. Wayne <>< www.londonderrynh.org/planning/musquashtrails_2007.pdf

Wayne, I had no prblem downloading map. If anybody has a problem,it may be a newer version of Adobe reader is necessary. I believe you can download for free. Thanks. On another note. Team: Dress in layers. use your tech clothes as a base layer for "wicking" then a fleace then a vapor barrier(your ALERT jacket). Bottoms should be water proof. Foot wear should be appropriate for the weather. (Pants should cover boot tops or use gators.) More than likely snow and water. Always carry extra socks and an extra fleece. Remember as Lt. Jordan said, if you are a little cold at the begining once you start moving you should be at a good temp. Another words try to avoid sweatting.(layer) Dont forget a hat & gloves. Plan 1 liter per hour for water.

We had a good turn out today for "Shelter operation" training. It was a fun time. A lot more to it than I thought. I think we will get cards from Red Cross to show we completed the training. Thank you all for giving the better part of your day to come out. George is having me look into a couple of training sessions: "Shelter Manager" and "Psychological First Aid" I will post when I have information.

The training today covered a lot of ground . There is one thing I would like to add from a class in "Classroom Management" or "Adolescent Psychology" back in the Dark ages.
If a person comes into a shelter angry and hostile it's probably better to reason with him without touching him. If he needs shelter he's got a good reason for his bad mood and touching can be construed as pushing or invasion of his " space" and only make a bad situation worse .

The Shelter Training was an excellent introduction to how to setup and man a shelter. Two thoughts came to mind during the day. We definitely need more advanced training to be successful in opening a shelter, especially as noted regarding mental health issues that are symptomatic of the clients coming to the shelter and we need more members to participate in these training sessions.

Hello All. Citizen corps has loaned us 4 GPS receivers to get aquainted with. I have to loan them out on a first come first serve basis. Criteria: (please) 1) You have to be a current ALERT member. (2) You must be participating in the 19 April Line search at the Musquash.(I have to collect them that day after drill). 3) If you already have a GPS ,please abstain from requesting. I would like all to be able to use one. That's it! Post your request on the board and in turn, I will post the 4 names that come in first. I will try to get them to you this week(Wes or Thurs) to give you time with them before the drill. Thanks Team.
